Evidence-Based Business Process Management

Marlon Dumas, and Fabrizio Maria Maggi

Abstract

Evidence-based business process management (BPM) seeks to instill a data-driven approach to the traditional lifecycle of business process improvement. A family of techniques, known as process mining, supports this data-driven approach by extracting useful information from business process event logs. This chapter gives an overview of process mining techniques and demonstrates via several case studies how these techniques enable evidence-based BPM in practice. The chapter will be of particular interest to business process analysts seeking to ground their hypotheses on evidence extracted from business process execution logs.
