TALK ISN’T CHEAP: ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION AND CONFLICT

There are lots of colloquial sayings about communication.

You probably have heard the expression, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Unfortunately, that expression can encourage passive behavior.

You may have also heard the saying that advocates a different attitude: “Don’t get mad, get even!” And unfortunately, this can promote nasty, aggressive behavior.

But there is an alternative approach: assertive behavior. I have a saying for this: “Say what you want to say, need to say, and choose to say in a polite and powerful manner.”
