China’s GPS—Simply Redundant or Incredibly Dangerous?

China has developed the Beidou system for both military and civilian uses. In this regard, China is following the lead of the United States in developing a system that is at its core a military system, but will also serve a variety of civil and commercial applications. The main concern for Chinese is that GPS can be turned off or degraded by the United States in the event of conflict. Consequently, China’s national interests require access to a satellite navigation and positioning system that is independent of foreign operation.
