Novelist Pearl S. Buck knew the Chinese people very well. The daughter of American missionaries, she grew up in China during particularly tumultuous years in the early twentieth century. Although China has been rife with turmoil throughout its history, the wholesale demise of the dynastic system made life particularly challenging in China during the years of Pearl Buck’s early youth. Foreigners like her, never especially welcome in China, had special challenges during this time. But she and her family were of hardy stock and would not leave.
