Successful change requires strong leadership.

But more than that, it requires leaders who genuinely and actively embrace the change – and are seen to do so. It requires a leadership team whose members are all aligned and working together to achieve the desired outcomes; outcomes that every one of them genuinely cares about delivering. It requires leaders who will ‘stay the course’ in the face of future obstructions and challenges. It requires leaders who ‘walk the walk’, not just ‘talk the talk’. And when it comes time for implementation, the leaders must be the first ones to embrace the new ways of working.

Any chink in this armour, any gap in the alignment, any hint of disagreement, any sign of hesitation and the change effort will begin to crumble – quickly.

Of course, to achieve this unity and clarity of purpose will require each member of the leadership team to be motivated personally and emotionally to support the change fully and actively. Like every other member of staff, the leadership will also be wondering, ‘What is in it for me?’ and they will need their individual concerns and needs addressed before they ...
