The path of least resistance

What do we do when faced with a new situation or experience? Naturally, we relate past experience to the new situation.

The brain develops neural pathways—physical folds and grooves—to connect concepts, knowledge, and past experience. What does this mean for changing people’s behavior?

It is hard to break old pathways. So, take the path of least resistance: relate new information to old.

Engrain new information by repeating it consistently and often.

Involve new people and environments to surprise the brain—keep it from predicting what will happen next.
