People Prefer the Predictable

 

The proof is in the potatoes. McDonald’s would not be so popular if people preferred the unpredictable. So what’s the appeal? The appeal is getting the same thing, every time. By choosing what is predictable, we are able to operate in automatic pilot and conserve our limited resources—time and energy— for things that we find meaningful. Confronted with something unpredictable on the horizon, we will fight for certainty, security, and control.
