Poor communication is a time waster. People will end up doing the wrong thing or get their feelings hurt, and therefore procrastinate or lose motivation. Finally, when not focused, people spend too much time on what might be called low-payoff activities—specifically, those things that do not directly contribute to bottom line results.

When you plan exactly what you want as a result and how you will communicate the necessary information, you will be able to focus your attention on the other person. This is “getting into the second person.” The first person is “me, me, me, and I.” When you plan well, you already know your agenda, and all of your senses are looking at the other person.
