Like most of the things that managers and supervisors do, delegating skill can be developed through repeated practice. Think back to your first experience with coaching a subordinate, giving feedback, or disciplining a slacker. You probably said something like this when it was over: “I sure messed that up.” On the other hand, you probably now recognize how much better you have become through experience. The same is true of delegating. If you look for opportunities to delegate tasks, do it often, and make a conscious effort to understand your own performance, you will become better at it.
