Extending the Network

The original idea behind the Wi-Fi specification was to provide wireless connections to LANs in limited areas such as businesses, homes, and public institutions. Wi-Fi was supposed to be a simple extension of traditional Ethernet to laptops and other computers that could not be conveniently connected through a cable. Other radio services would provide wireless access to the Internet from public spaces.

That was the plan. But Wi-Fi gear is inexpensive, it doesn't require a license, and it's relatively easy to set up and use. So an entire culture of "guerilla networkers" emerged to develop alternative uses for the technology that extend the reach of wireless networks beyond their own offices, classrooms, and homes.
