D.1 What Does the Future Hold?

The next major step in GIMP development is the full inclusion of GEGL, which is only partly used in the current version and is mostly invisible to normal users. When GIMP is fully GEGL-capable, it will include the following features:

  • Support for 16-bit representation per channel.

  • Nondestructive editing, which allows transformations to be made without changing the original content (this is called adjustment layers in some raster graphics applications and node-based workflow in others).

  • Direct use of CMYK color representation.
