Chapter . Murder of Bhutto

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto had brought hope to many in the country when she returned after nine years of self-imposed exile to run again for political office. Bhutto was widely disliked, having been forced out of the country on charges of corruption, and she knew she was in constant danger. Still, it came as something of a shock when she was assassinated in a haze of gunfire during a political rally. News of Bhutto’s death sparked riots across Pakistan, even as President Pervez Musharraf condemned the tragedy. Bhutto had been a strong U.S. ally, and many cartoonists mourned her death, though some were still skeptical of her politics.
