CHAPTER 6 The Best Expedition in the World
In 1770 Lieutenant James Cook sailed the HMB Endeavour up the coast of Australia. His initial landfall on the continent was at Botany Bay in New South Wales. He was one of the first Europeans to walk on the Great Southern Land. Cook had sailed from Plymouth across the Atlantic, down the coast of South America and around Cape Horn, before crossing the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand and making his way up the eastern seaboard of Australia.
He came ashore in Queensland, at what is now a town called 1770, in search of fresh water and supplies. From here his voyage continued northward up the coast, hemmed in by the treacherous waters and coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef.
