Conclusion: The Choices We Make

Twelve years ago I wrote a long letter to a plant manager I was working with. The letter embodied my hopes and fears for his organization’s renewal. His plant was in the middle of redesigning itself, renewing the life of the workplace, and attempting to build on the plant’s rich history. The project had grown well beyond its early success and was taking root in the organization. But it was beginning to bog down. While flying home from a sobering visit, I put down my thoughts. Like this book, the letter asserts the project’s life-giving elements. Like this book, it expresses the struggle to reach beyond the pressures of the moment to create something to be proud of for generations.
