The young soldier stood at a small roundabout on a deserted beachfront road north of the Israeli city of Netanya. Behind him, a sandy beach stretched to the blue Mediterranean. In front of him, arid parkland sprouted with sage and spiny shrubs. A duffle bag and overstuffed rucksack—both the same olive drab as his uniform—squatted at his feet. As we approached in our little rented car, he raised one hand to shield his squinting eyes from the bright sun and used the other to flag us down.
