When the World Wide Web arrived in 1994, newspapers and broadcast stations began putting their content online. Their efforts reminded veteran journalists of the early days of television, when, absent knowledge of how to use the strengths of that medium, newscasts amounted to nothing more than a reporter reading the news on camera. Similarly, early efforts to put news online amounted to little more than making the text of stories available on the Web.
