It was late in the evening when the call came in over the police scanner. There had been an accident on Route 81, about ten miles north of the small town in New York where I was working as a photojournalist on a daily newspaper. A driver entering the highway on the wrong side of the road had hit another car head-on. An important detail in this story is that this wasn’t just an isolated, unfortunate accident. It was the third time in as many months that someone had made a wrong turn there and entered the highway on the wrong side. It was the first time, however, that this action had caused a fatality.
