Great film design is about developing a sense of proportion, a feeling for what “works.” What “reads” well beyond the frame or frontal plane? Large trees framing the cattle run in Red River? Small trees? No trees at all? The artist’s entire effort should be to capture the viewers’ attention and keep them visually stimulated. Viewers want to see the results of your creative eye. An awareness of the various planes that exist behind the picture plane will help you think not only in terms of great composition but also three-dimensionally.
