It would be hard to write about the role of the record producer without first highlighting the extraordinary work of the early pioneers of modern record production. The first sea-change happened in the 1950s, with the birth of rock ‘n’ roll when producer Sam Phillips opened his Memphis Recording Services studio, signing Elvis and creating Sun Records.
