Concluding Remarks

Well-conducted interviews not only provide the richest possible picture of an individual’s skills and behavior, they can also be a valuable experience for those providing the feedback. Particularly in cases in which the recipient is an important figure to them, interviewees appreciate the chance to clarify their ideas and feelings about the person in a confidential, nonthreatening setting.
The implicit message of every interview should be, “We value your opinion; we really want to hear what you have to say.” Creating a positive atmosphere for the interview can lead to more constructive comments and suggestions; raters will see their role as one of providing helpful advice rather than criticism.
