REAL-LIFE SHOT: FOCUS PULL

As I mentioned in Chapter 2, a focus rack is used in filmmaking to quickly shift attention from one area of the frame to another, underscoring an important plot point or visual detail important to the story. This move is often accompanied by “dun dun DUN!” music. A focus pull is generally more subtle, used simply to keep a character in focus as he or she moves through the frame (also called “follow focus”). As I've mentioned, I don't see them too frequently in VFX shots, but they do show up. Focus racks and pulls often look like Z translation to a solver, so the biggest part of the battle in solving a focus pull is knowing you have one in the first place! Let's look at how to attack a shot like this.
