2010 was an aggressive year even by North Korean standards. On 26 March, a South Korean navy vessel, ROKS Cheonan, was torpedoed and sunk, causing the deaths of 46 of its 104 crew members. Then on 23 November, Yeonpyeong Island, precariously located off the far northwest coast of South Korea, was bombarded by mainland North Korean artillery, resulting in four dead and 19 wounded.
