Chapter 1. Introduction
Purchasing a smartphone is something that one shouldn’t do lightly. Carriers—AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, to name a few—subsidize most smartphone purchases in America. This means that in exchange for signing a contract for a certain number of years of service, the carriers knock hundreds of dollars off the cost of the phone. They make this up month by month as you pay your bill for service.
Why do I mention this? Because a two-year contract is a commitment, and the Fire phone is a gamble. It is Amazon’s first entry into the smartphone market, so who knows if you’ll like it? And if you don’t, you’ll have to pay a hefty fee to cancel your contract, or buy a replacement phone at full price.
