Chapter 28. The Bigotry Is Almost Gone—A Boomer’s Perspective
In 1955, Sammy Davis, Jr. impulsively jumped into a swimming pool at the Las Vegas Strip hotel where he was headlining but not allowed to stay. He was hot. The water was cool. He was refreshed.
The hotel drained the pool. Yes, that’s right—drained the pool!
Sammy had to stay at a hotel that catered to Negroes on the outskirts of town. He was not even allowed to gamble in the casinos. No Negroes allowed! If he wanted to buy some new clothes, he had better guess right on the size because Negroes were not allowed to try on new clothes. If they tried them on, they had to buy them. (I wonder what people thought we would catch from them.)
