Portraiture begins in the home. Indeed, the greatest gift a photographer can give to family members, friends, even to strangers, is a portrait that records a moment that will never come again. A portrait does not have to be flattering. Take the series of portraits made by Richard Avedon of his terminally ill father, Jacob Israel Avedon. These portraits are a powerful document of two men’s struggle with mortality, Richard and Jacob. Viewers today see a testament to the human spirit and the complex relationship between father and son.
