A naval architect is an engineer who specialises in the design, construction and repair of seagoing craft, including cruise liners, Merchant Navy vessels, warships, submarines, ferries, pleasure craft and high-speed boats. Shipbuilding has declined as an industry in the United Kingdom, but there are opportunities to build and design small craft, especially in coastal towns. Some naval architects also work for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency inspecting ships in port to ensure that they are seaworthy.
