The Secret Skill: Number 109

One additional skill defines the natural born leader phenomenon: the capacity to identify additional skills that help meet new leadership challenges. Master leaders constantly seek new behaviors and variations of behaviors that refine leadership effectiveness.

John Gardner gave the commencement address at my 1970 college graduation. Gardner, then chairman of the National Urban Coalition, described the human tendency to believe that a finite goal exists for our life. He explained that we expect to get to a place where we have "arrived." Gardner challenged this notion. He said, "Life is not a summit, it is the mountain that has no real summit, no final goal or ultimate end point."
