77. Champion and Shield

Master leaders champion others and their work. They also shield others from the inevitable challenges and unfair criticisms that occur within organizations. Being a champion and shield builds the leader's commitment base because it reinforces rapport, fulfills followers' expectations of the leader, and creates credibility.

Take overt actions to champion others. Talk up your followers' successes to key people in your organization. Point out your followers' movement toward success. Sponsor others for assignments on key projects. Advocate others' proposals. Promote the work of others within your established sphere of influence.
