40. Monitor the Forces of Change

Change disrupts routines and creates unforeseen opportunities. Change, like the ocean waves, can be a big turbulent force or a small gentle nudge. Change creates the need to lead. The best leaders recognize the two primary forces of change:

  • Demanded change

  • Desired change

Demanded or required change typically comes as an external press. A new government regulation or a threat from a competitor demands attention from those who want to lead an organization. A new organizational policy or procedure or an order from senior management requires a response from those who want to lead a group or unit.
