39. Recognize Trends

Master leaders recognize that trouble comes if they do not know what is coming. They understand that trends represent meaningful forces that have substantial impact. In contrast, fads are passing interests. Exceptional leaders recognize trends to uncover the arenas in which they need to lead.

Consider the changing trend in how people are employed. In 2000, nearly 33 percent of American workers, or 34 million people, are contingency workers, according to The Motivational Manager.[6] This group includes temporary workers, part-timers, consultants, freelancers, and the self-employed.
