31. Unravel Rumors

Rumors wreak havoc on organizations. Rumors represent unsubstantiated information that spreads like wildfire through the "rumor mill." Rumors frequently take on a negative tone. Think about it. Rumors are unproven information. People often create a worst case about such information. They become fearful and spin the most negative tale. Skillful leaders understand these realities about rumors. They clarify expectations by unraveling rumors.

Conduct a rumor mill discussion. Conclude regularly scheduled meetings with the question, "What rumors do you hear within the organization?" Make this a formal part of each meeting. The question opens the door to rumor unraveling.
