30. "Netware" Your Expectations

Today's leaders have the Internet as another tool to clarify expectations. E-mail and websites can be used to set and explain expectations.

Create an expectation e-mail format that others understand. E-mail has become a double-edged sword. Its swiftness and ease of use have been offset by its overuse. Some managers I know get hundreds of e-mails every day. Avoid having your expectation e-mails become just another difficult detail. Work with others to discuss when and how you could send expectation-setting e-mails that they would welcome. For example, agree on a specific subject line that clearly flags the expectation e-mail.
