18. Size People Up

Exceptional leaders size people up to gauge where others are coming from and how to respond to them. Sizing people up helps to reveal what others care about and believe is important. It helps the leader understand the "how and why" behind other people's responses. By effectively sizing someone up, leaders know how to clarify expectations (see Chapter 5) more quickly and completely. It also makes it easier to determine when and how the leader can work with others to identify a meaningful leadership direction (see Chapter 6) and chart a meaningful course of action for them (see Chapter 7).
