15. Listen with Active Ears

Exceptional leaders listen. They pay careful attention to what others say. Think of these words: "Pay attention." A cost of awareness must be incurred to listen. The best leaders pay this price to show others they are interested and understand them. Listening with "active ears" means your ears and awareness are focused and alert to the other person. Listening demonstrates respect. Listening also helps you respond more accurately. Followers are attracted to those who actively listen. Active listening also helps you determine where and how followers need direction and how to meet a follower's needs.
