Writing System Variation and Text Entry

10.1 INTRODUCTION

Through Parts I, II, and IV of this book, the default language used for text entry tasks is English. This is because computers were first developed for the U.S. market and so the English interface was incorporated by default. However, in many parts of the world, text entry on computers, mobile phones, and PDAs is not done in English but in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Russian, through scripts that are dissimilar to that of English.
