Coding in FSO Channels

The deep fades due to turbulence in the atmosphere can cause significant errors between the input and the output data sequences of the wireless optical communication system and the probability of bit error due to these may be as high as 10–2, which is not acceptable. The fundamental requirement of most wireless providers is to deliver communication links that provide uncorrupted data, voice or video with minimum delay and power requirement. For wireless optical communication links to become useful, we require FSO links with rates above 100 Mbps and error rates not exceeding 10–6.
