A vehicle applies normal load to the terrain through the running gear, which results in sinkage. This in turn causes motion resistance. In addition, an element of the terrain is usually subject to the repetitive loading of the consecutive wheels of a multi-axle wheeled vehicle or of the roadwheels in a track system.
