Understanding Local versus Server

When you access a database (such as your Mail database) while at work and connected to the network, you probably are accessing a database that resides on the Domino server. If you work for a large company, it's possible that you have more than one Domino server, and it's possible that you access databases directly from each of those servers. The name Domino refers to the name and type of Lotus Notes software the server is running, but the servers you access also have another name, which helps differentiate among servers.

The names of your servers at work can be descriptive names, such as "Sales" or "Marketing," or they can be generic, such as "NS1" (short for Notes Server 1).
