Changing the Gridlines
By default, horizontal gridlines appear in an Excel chart. You can change to vertical gridlines only or a combination of both horizontal and vertical. In addition, you can change the value gridline's upper and lower limits and the interval between major gridlines. Also, you can display minor gridlines.
Major and Minor Gridlines
Major gridlines help you pinpoint exact locations in a chart without cluttering the chart. When major gridlines don't provide enough detail, you can use minor gridlines as well. Minor gridlines fall between the major intervals on the axis.
