The television marketplace has become increasingly competitive since the early 1990s. Technological developments have driven the growth of television channels and opened up new platforms for the transmission of programmes and much other content as the emergence of digital communications has begun a process of rapid transformation of the traditional media landscape. The conversion of pictures and sounds into binary codes means that content can be compressed to the extent that it is possible to convey significantly more content to media consumers, including television viewers, within the same waveband space (Negroponte, 1995).
