CHAPTER 2 WHO DOES WHAT?

In this chapter we will be looking at how television programs get to be made, who commissions them, who pays for them and who makes them. We will be looking at how the industry is organised, the different types of company involved and the various roles that individuals play. Most of this is described in the context of the UK television industry.

The Sectors

The industry can be divided into two sectors: broadcast and non-broadcast.

The broadcast sector is television as we all know and watch it most days in our homes – news, documentaries, sport, drama and entertainment packaged into a schedule.
