In response to a sharp worldwide increase in iron and steel consumption during the period of high economic growth in the 1970s, newly industrialized countries (NICs) such as Brazil, Mexico, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea constructed integrated plants and minimills for ironmaking, steelmaking and rolling, and these countries have been steadily expanding their steelmaking capacity ever since. In addition, Mexico and Korea have been in the forefront of technological development, Mexico with the HYLSA reduction process and Korea with the Samsung Compact Stripping Process.
