8 STICK TO THE STORY

Technical writing is all about getting the most from the least: nobody wants to wade through something the size of a brick just to find out what button to press or what headgear they need to order. Always keep in mind the who, what and how we explored earlier: who am I writing for, what information do they need and how do they need to receive it?

It’s very important to keep putting yourself in the readers’ shoes. For example, I love wordplay, puns and bad jokes and tend to use them in headlines. And when I do, editors come along and take them all out again because they aren’t helping the reader.
