There are many names for it – chunking, topic-based writing, task-based writing, modular writing and many more – but whatever you want to call it, one of the most effective ways to produce technical writing is to take the overall project and break it down into small parts.

There are two very good reasons for doing that. The first is that it makes it easier for the reader to find the information they need as quickly as possible, instead of wading through lots of information they don’t need. Guidance that’s hard to find is often guidance that doesn’t get read.
