At the denouement of San Diego State’s production of Triumph of Love, a cardboard carriage rolls up to the door of a fairytale castle, high on a storybook hill, and five fluttering pennants rise suggestively from the tops of the castle towers. Single-acting, shop-built pneumatic cylinders powered each pennant — cylinders whose pistons are mini paint rollers.
