THE CONCEPT OF CHOICE

 

Experts in rewards and recognition agree that “choice” is an important element in a successful recognition program. The belief is: “One size does NOT fit all.”

Program planners often think that everyone enjoys the same things. My colleague and rewards expert, Jerry McAdams, tells the story of a reward he received that was a nightmare. He worked for a small company and the reward for being “employee of the month” was having dinner with the owner and his wife at their country club. For an 18-year-old with minimal social skills, this was a rewards disaster. He hated the whole experience. Given a choice, Jerry would have preferred a certificate for a meal at a local fast food restaurant.
