Extrinsic Rewards

Extrinsic rewards come from the external environment in which team members work and live. Many psychologists think of extrinsic rewards as “satisfiers” rather than motivators, because they do not appeal to the inner self and tend to be short-lived. Many people think of extrinsic rewards only as cash payments such as a bonus, incentive pay, or commission. However, they can also be low-cost or no-cost rewards provided by an external person.

Some Examples:

1. Public recognition. The manager or team leader makes positive comments about the work of the team at a company meeting.

2. Public presentation. The team is asked to give a presentation on their work at a staff meeting or company conference.
