Chapter 6. ADAPTIVE TEAM PLAYERS

Much like individuals, teams experience stages of development. Teams mature from early formation through various phases into a developed organizationprovided certain positive actions are taken. Again like individuals, teams also can get stuck in an immature phase and can suffer a case of arrested growth and ineffectiveness. Team players have an important role to play in each stage. Effective team players can successfully move a team toward maturity with specific, positive actions.

Tuckman (1965) identified four stages of team development:

  1. Forming

  2. Storming

  3. Norming

  4. Performing
