Ideally, you would like to have a clear definition of your authority as a team leader and, beyond that, the authority of your team. It would be helpful to have a discussion with your sponsor at the kick-off of the team about your level of empowerment—in other words, “here are things you can decide and here are the things that must be approved by management before proceeding.” However, this rarely happens.

As a result, many team leaders and their teams assume the default position is “little” or “none” and, therefore, they need to go to management for approval of all key decisions.
