In the words of that well-known proverb, “if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” In other words, it is important to have a goal, but a goal is of no value without a plan to achieve it. This is where a project plan become essential.

The elements of a successful project plan include:

Step 1: Project Goals. Typically, a senior manager provides an overarching goal and serves as project sponsor. However, some teams get their initial charge from another stakeholder, such as a line manager, customer or other user. In most cases, you will want to collect data from the stakeholder to clarify their needs and problems that the project outcomes will address. From these data, specific goals are set.
